NEW DELHI: Completing ten uninterrupted years as Prime Minister and a day after BJP's landslide victory, Manmohan Singh on Saturday submitted resignation of his council of ministers, saying the mandate should be respected by all. He also wished the incoming government success.
Shortly after the cabinet recommended dissolution of the Lok Sabha, Singh drove down to Rashtrapati Bhavan to submit his resignation to President Pranab Mukherjee who asked him to continue as caretaker PM till the new government is formed.
"The just concluded elections have deepened the foundations of our democratic polity," said Singh in a remark that appeared to diverge from Congress's claim that the election of Narendra Modi posed a threat to country's "secular" ethos.
In his last televised address to the nation, Singh said he had tried to do his best in serving the country and his tenure was an "open book".
"Ten years ago, when I was entrusted with this responsibility, I entered upon it with diligence as my tool, truth as my beacon and a prayer that I might always do the right thing," he said.
"In the last ten years, we as a country have seen many successes and achievements that we should be proud of. Today, India is a far stronger country in every respect than it was a decade ago.
"I give credit for these successes to all of you. However, there is still vast latent development potential in our country and we must collectively work hard to realize it", Singh said.
Singh, who served for the longest tenure in a stretch after Jawaharlal Nehru's 17 years in office, chose the occasion to refer to his humble origin as "an underprivileged child of Partition".
He said, "I owe everything to this country, this great land of ours where I, an underprivileged child of Partition, was empowered enough to rise and occupy high office. It is both a debt that I will never be able to repay and a decoration that I will always wear with pride."
Expressing his confidence in India's future, he said, "I firmly believe that the emergence of India as a major powerhouse of the evolving global economy is an idea whose time has come. Blending tradition with modernity and unity with diversity, this nation of ours can show the way forward to the world. Serving this nation has been my privilege. There is nothing more that I could ask for."
Mukherjee, who had worked in Singh's Cabinet as finance, defence and external affairs minister, showed the courtesy of coming to the forecourt of the Rashtrapati Bhavan to see him off.

लोकसभा चुनावों में यूपीए की करारी हार के बाद शनिवार को प्रधानमंत्री मनमोहन सिंह ने राष्ट्रपति प्रणव मुखर्जी को अपना इस्तीफा सौंप दिया। मनमोहन ने इस्तीफे से पहले राष्ट्र के नाम भावुक संदेश दिया। उन्होंने अपने छोटे से संबोधन में कहा कि मेरा जीवन और कार्यकाल खुली किताब है।
उन्होंने कहा, 'मुझे जो कुछ भी मिला इस देश की वजह से मिला। इस देश ने बंटवारे से बेघर हुए एक बच्चे को इतने ऊंचे ओहदे तक पहुंचाया, मैं इस कर्ज को कभी चुका नहीं सकता।'

उन्होंने कहा, 'प्यारे देशवासियो, आज मैं आपको प्रधानमंत्री के रूप में आखिरी बार संबोधित कर रहा हूं। दस साल पहले इस जि़म्मेदारी को संभालते वक्त मैंने अपनी पूरी मेहनत से काम करने और सचाई के रास्ते पर चलने का निश्चय किया था।
मेरी ईश्वर से प्रार्थना थी कि मैं हमेशा सही काम करूं। आज, जब प्रधानमंत्री का पद छोड़ने का वक्त आ गया है, मुझे अहसास है कि ईश्वर के अंतिम निर्णय से पहले, सभी चुने गए प्रतिनिधियों और सरकारों के काम पर जनता की अदालत भी फैसला करती है। मेरे प्यारे देशवासियों, आपने जो फैसला दिया है, हम सभी को उसका सम्मान करना चाहिए।'
प्रधानमंत्री ने कहा, 'इन लोकसभा चुनावों से हमारी लोकतांत्रिक व्यवस्था की जड़ें मजबूत हुई हैं। जैसा मैंने कई बार कहा है, मेरा सार्वजनिक जीवन एक खुली किताब है। मैंने हमेशा अपनी पूरी क्षमता से अपने महान राष्ट्र की सेवा करने की कोशिश की है।
पिछले दस सालों के दौरान हमने बहुत सी सफलताएं और उपलब्धियां हासिल की हैं जिन पर हमें गर्व है। आज हमारा देश हर मायने में दस साल पहले के भारत से कहीं ज्.यादा मजबूत है। देश की सफलताओं का श्रेय मैं आप सबको देता हूं। लेकिन अभी भी हमारे देश में विकास की बहुत सी संभावनाएं हैं, जिनका फायदा उठाने के लिए हमें एकजुट होकर कड़ी मेहनत करने की जरूरत है।'
भावुक लहजे में मनमोहन ने कहा, 'प्रधानमंत्री का पद छोड़ने के बाद भी आपके प्यार और मोहब्बत की याद हमेशा मेरे जहन में ताजा रहेगी। मुझे जो कुछ भी मिला है, इस देश से ही मिला है। एक ऐसा देश जिसने बंटवारे के कारण बेघर हुए एक बच्चे को इतने ऊंचे पद तक पहुंचा दिया। यह एक ऐसा कर्ज है जिसे मैं कभी अदा नहीं कर सकता। यह एक ऐसा सम्मान भी है जिस पर मुझे हमेशा गर्व रहेगा। मित्रो, मुझे भारत के भविष्य के बारे में पूरा इत्मीनान है।
मुझे पक्का विश्वास है कि वह समय आ गया है जब भारत दुनिया की बदलती हुई अर्थव्यवस्था में एक महत्वपूर्ण शक्ति के रूप में उभरेगा। परंपरा को आधुनिकता के साथ और विविधता को एकता के साथ मिलाते हुए हमारा देश दुनिया को आगे का रास्ता दिखा सकता है। अपने महान देश की सेवा करने का मौका मिलना मेरा सौभाग्य रहा है। मैं इससे ज्यादा कुछ और नहीं मांग सकता था। मेरी शुभकामना है कि आने वाली सरकार अपने काम-काज में हर तरह से सफल रहे। मैं अपने देश के लिए और भी बड़ी
